How SMX URL Analysis Works

Analysis

URL Analysis evaluates URLs within the message, using a risk score based on:

1.  Country / Top Level Domain (TLD) - SMX scores URLs negatively (or positively) based on domainor country.
2.  Content – SMX scores based on a number of content types, including, misspelt or suspect wordsor “invisible content”.
3.  Masking – URL Analysis looks for masking patterns which may indicate that the Sender is tryingto mask the true destination of the URL. Common examples include:

1.  HTTPS to HTTP
   
2.  HTTP to IP Address
   

Notification

Where a message has triggered URL Analysis, SMX will add a warning to the original message,

informing the recipient that the email contains suspicious URLs.

Customers can choose to provide their own warning messages or use the SMX default:

1.  Subject: “SMX Warning: Suspicious links”
   
2.  Footer: “SMX Warning: Links in this email have suspicious characteristics”
   

Example

The following shows an example of a message which has triggered URL Analysis due to content

masking of a HTTP link and a mismatch of the destination domain name.
