How to migrate mailboxes from one Office 365 tenant to another

How to migrate mailboxes from one Office 365 tenant to another

You may have the requirement to move Exchange Online mailboxes from one tenant to another. This could be due to a Merger/Acquisition, Demerger/Divestiture or Spin-Off, or for a tenant-to-tenant migration, which is usually required if the original tenant was created in another region of the world (ie US-based, but the company is in Australia, New Zealand, or South-East Asia).

What to consider in a Tenant-to-Tenant Migration

Microsoft have provided guidance as well as a handy printable guide for Tenant-to-Tenant migrations. Please refer to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/enterprise/microsoft-365-tenant-to-tenant-migrations?view=o365-worldwide

Use a third-party Migration Tool

rhipe recommends that partners use a migration tool to assist them in moving user accounts, mailboxes and data. This makes it far easier to manage the migration and reduce impacts to your customers, as well as making the overall migration faster. We recommend that you use AvePoint from our product list in PRISM Portal, which will migrate User Accounts, Mailboxes, and data from Sharepoint, Teams and OneDrive. The licensing cost for this is extremely competitive and will help reduce costs and effort for the migration.

If you need to move Dynamics or Azure between tenants, please contact us for further information on how that can be achieved.

Use Microsoft-provided Tools

You may wish to perform a migration with the Microsoft Tools, but these are usually limited to a single area (Mailbox, Sharepoint, OneDrive). You can refer to the following article for the instructions how to do so: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/How-to-migrate-mailboxes-from-one-Office-365-tenant-to-another-65af7d77-3e79-44d4-9173-04fd991358b7
